About Old Post Office

The historic Old Post Office located in beautiful downtown Bainbridge, Georgia embodies the regal history of an earlier time. A total renovation brings a Southwest Georgia treasure back to life creating a sophisticated classic event space for memorable events and relaxed enjoyment.

The “data center” of its time. The United States Post Office was the communication and financial hub of the community. Letters and Postcards, paper money, gold and silver all transited by mail. Even the Federal Circuit judge held court (literally) in the south upper chambers of the Post Office. Mail was collected, brought in, sorted and disseminated by PO boxes from the main lobby, by mail carriers on foot, and by horsedrawn wagon (the old hitching posts are still in the back drive)

Built in 1914 and inaugurated by the United States Department of Treasury’s secretary, the old post office stands as a testament to Federal turn of the Century architecture. During the renovation, which abided by US Department of Interior requirements, the old post office was brought back to its original majesty with the incorporation of nearly all of the pre-existing and surviving architectural elements.

The Old Post Office features a number of architectural treasures rarely found in construction today. Step back in time to a prohibition era structure where hidden away in the basement is the Mailroom speakeasy. Intimate environments for friends to gather are common throughout the building. From the cigar lounge set apart from the main area of the basement bar to the Postmaster’s Parlor on the main floor overlooking the downtown square, to the cat walk running nearly the length of the building and hidden away in the ballroom ceiling. The old post office surprises with grand and intimate areas to meet with friends and celebrate.

Monthly the Old Post Office hosts a jazz performance like none other, the True Blue band with its lead guitarist Steven Williamson, a Bainbridge native, is world renowned.

Other unique features are a large walk-in vault with a door the weight of a car. The perfect spot for an interior selfie shot. The main ballroom boasts a large rolling safe that to this day has been unable to be cracked. The layout of the old post office is a main street walk up entryway with ADA ramp access in the rear. These open to a large ballroom that can accommodate any manner of events and configuration of tables. The original Terrazzo floored lobby with inlaid wood trimming the walls and columns, serves as the entry area and full bar for the main floor. Proximate to the bar is an ADA bathroom and a large intimate space (the Postmaters Parlor) that is privately rentable with a smart television and bar service overlooking the downtown Square. A full catering kitchen is available for private events.  And food is available to order through our downtown restaurant partners. It’s not unusual for people to order food and enjoy it at their table while listening to jazz music on a Friday night up in the ballroom or in Mr. Penny’s candlelit room in the downstairs speakeasy.

The location on the square means The Bean coffee shop is around the corner, as are multiple options for casual and fine dining.

The Old Post Office is perfect for all manner of celebratory events, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, class get-togethers, etc. Smaller events, such as a baby shower or small wedding would be perfect at our sister property. Temple Bethel is a 1916 beautifully restored and converted synagogue seconds from downtown. With ample space either in the main ballroom of the Old Post Office, or a smaller venue such as the synagogue, the Old Post Office and its sister property can accommodate your event needs.

Our bars are open to the public Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday nights. Unless booked for private events.
